Grade 3 Up A collection of poems about food, containing approximately 120 helpings. These portions consist of old favorites and newer items by a wide range of poets, including Prelutsky, Nash, Farjeon, Silverstein, de la Mare, Kuskin, and Spike Milligan. Meter and style vary widely, but the unifying factor is humor, whether bordering on the vulgar or more subtly amusing. Some of the references are distinctly British, but for children who relish nonsense a few Briticisms won't stand in their way. The cadence and language of these poems make them fun for reading out loud. The profuse, brilliantly colored cartoon illustrations add the right touch of whimsey. Lee Bennett Hopkins' Munching: Poems About Eating (Little, 1985) has fewer selections than this one. The book will appeal to children for pleasure reading and for assignments, and children too young to read the book will enjoy hearing the poems read aloud.
