Born in Hartford, Connecticut, Amy J. Kotkin received her B.A. in American Studies at Case Western Reserve University and her M.A. in American civilization from the University of Pennsylvania.
Holly Cutting Baker was born in Fall River, Massachusetts. She has a bachelor's degree from Emmanuel College and is completing her Ph.D. in folklore at the University of Pennsylvania.
Zeitlin, Kotkin, and Cutting Baker, with the help of Sandra Gross, founded the Family Folklore Program at the Smithsonian Institution in 1974. Steven Zeitlin coordinated the program, and is currently at work on a folklore project with the Queens Council on the Arts in New York City. He has also made several documentary films. Currently, Amy Kotkin assists in producing a touring lecture and seminar series for the Smithsonian National Associate Regional Events Program. Holly Cutting Baker has been an archivist with the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress and is now at home caring for her husband John and her daughter Kate.
