In an effort to save her family from poverty, a young woman takes employment as a governess and discovers the great difficulties, instability, and even abuse that accompany her new position in Victorian society.

Based on Brontė’s own experiences as a governess, Agnes Grey is a poignant tale that explores the repression of women as well as the coming of age of a young and memorable heroine. Deeply personal and socially critical, Agnes Grey has been described by the Irish novelist George Moore as “the most perfect prose narrative in the English language.”

About the Author:
Anne Brontė (1820-49) was the youngest of the Brontė sisters. The two novels written in her brief career, Agnes Grey and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, and a volume of poetry written with her sisters, are established classics of the Victorian period.
Review:
''Anne Bronte attacks her problem with a freedom and audacity before which her sisters boldest enterprises seem cowardly and restrained...Her behavior is revolutionary.'' --May Sinclair, novelist and suffragist

''Agnes Grey is a charming novel, full of fine character painting and strongly marked by the exquisite development and analysis of the female heart...Agnes Grey, the heroine, herself, is one of the most vigorous and truthful drawings of character, one of the finest pieces of pen-limning that we have encountered anywhere.'' --Graham's Magazine (1850)

''I should like to give it to every family with a governess and shall read it through again when I have a governess to remind me to be human.'' --Lady Amberly

''Bronte depicts in detail the isolation inherent in a governess's life, as an educated - but by necessity not too educated - woman trapped in an awkward halfway world between the classes.'' --Guardian
BR> ''Agnes Grey is the most perfect prose narrative of English letters... Simple and beautiful... The only story in English literature in which style, characters, and subject are in perfect keeping.'' -- George Moore

''For too long [Anne] has been undervalued as the third-best Bronte. But her fiction, exploring the lamentably still current themes of addiction and domestic violence and the abuse of vulnerable women working away from home, has a vigour and bracing satirical intelligence which places her in the first rank of what is arguably the greatest ever generation of novelists in English.'' --Lucy Hughes-Hallett

''[McCaddon] makes the young protagonist come to life in her nuanced first-person reading; her crisp and educated voice conveying the narrator's energy and persistent optimism, while renderings of Agnes' masters, mistresses, and young charges show them for the uncouth bullies that they actually are, despite their superior airs and flaunted gentility.'' --Kliatt
