James' parents always want to play with him, while he would rather play alone, but he soon thinks of a way they can all have fun

From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-G r 1 James is a young child who delights, typically, in quiet activities such as watching a beetle make its way slowly down the path, a spider spin a web, or a single leaf land atop a pile of fallen leaves. His parents, however, interrupt his solitary observations with shouts to join them in loud and boisterous activities, which they construe as a child's idea of fun: scattering piles of leaves into the air; splashing in rain puddles; swinging and sliding in the park. Finally, a perfect solution is reached: James goes to play school, where his mother joins the other "hyper" parents in their frenzied attempts at "fun," while the children quietly and happily do their own thing. This is a consciousness-raising book for parents, to be sure, but one which may hit the mark with many children. Foreman's vivid water-colors capture well the contrasting ideas of parents and their young offspring. Sally R. Dow, Ossining Public Library, N.Y.
