In this beginning chapter book, Hughes presents believable characters and situations. Brad's father pressures his son to keep working harder and practicing longer, pushing the boy in a way that other children might relate to, whether in sports or in other activities. Johnson's pencil sketches appear every few pages and add to the story's realism. The children look and act like typical third graders.
