From Booklist:
Life in a Welsh mining town in 1860 is hard, and 18-year-old Megan Price's family is trying to cope with the loss of her father while slowly starving. Her mother sees no way out of her predicament except to take another husband, so she marries a man whom Megan considers beneath contempt, and when he tries to abuse her, Megan knows that it's time to leave. She goes to London in search of her grandmother, who remarried well and will hopefully be generous. The size and the noise of the city are frightening, and the task of finding her grandmother seems hopeless when Megan suffers the standard mishap of the naive: her money is stolen along with her grandmother's address. Eventually befriended by Tom Bradley, the local baker's son, Megan continues her search during what turns out to be one of the worst winters on record, still determined to find help for her family. Happily, Baker transcends a cliched plot by writing a truly warm and perceptive story. Patty Engelmann
