A World Ignited is about the surge of anger that has swept the world in the last decade, its myriad causes, its toll in lives and human misery. This anger is amplified by modern, especially television and the Internet, and made more lethal by modern weaponry, and unprecedented tactics that strive for mass death and anguish. The authors conclude in an upbeat manner with a look at the politics of hope and what can be done to halt, and even reverse, this cacophony of hate.

About the Author:
Martin Tolchin capped a forty-year career at The New York Times, where he reported on Congress and politics, by becoming founder, publisher, and editor-in-chief of The Hill newspaper. He now serves as senior editor and publisher at Allbritton Communications. Susan J. Tolchin is professor of public policy at George Mason University and the author of The Angry American: How Voter Rage is Changing the Nation (1996 and 1998). Together the Tolchins have written six previous books, including Glass Houses: Congressional Ethics and the Politics of Venom (2001) and Selling Our Security: The Erosion of America's Assets (1992).
Review:
This is a much-needed book that rips up the roots of rage. The crusading Tolchins have done it again. (William Safire, THE NEW YORK TIMES SUNDAY MAGAZINE)

A scholarly work that is wonderfully readable . . . combines fascinating history with unvarnished political commentary. This is a book everyone should read ― and remember. (Marianne Means, Washington Columnist, Hearst Newspapers)

A vivid, authoritative, and highly readable narrative. (Stanley Karnow)

A World Ignited examines the head-on collision of history, politics, and passion. . . . The book travels the anger, fear, resentment, and humiliation that define our times. (Frank Sesno, CNN Special Correspondent and Professor of Public Policy and Communication, George Mason University)

This seminal and well written work combines careful scholarship and keen insight from the perspectives of a nationally known journalist and a widely respected academic. The Tolchin team has done it again. I strongly recommend this book for students, scholars, policy makers, and the general public. It is written in a way to benefit all readers and brings wisdom and insight to the issues surrounding conflict. (James A. Thurber, director, Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies, American University)
