When we applied to medical school, we had little idea what it meant to get a good medical education. We thought that national reputation, largely set by U.S. News and World Report, determined what was a "good" medical school and, by definition, what was a "bad" school. You will eventually realize that reputation matters little--but usually not until you have already gone through the process and made your decision about which med school to attend. We wrote this book because we were frustrated by the lack of honest information about med schools when we applied; because we felt woefully cheated by school catalogs, U.S. News rankings, and guide books written by non-physicians or doctors who trained 30 years ago; and because we believe that medical schools each have a unique character that applicants need to know about. Each essay is written by a current student or recent graduate. Each writer was encouraged to be as subjective as possible, while attempting to capture the general truths about each school. After each essay, you should be prompted to ask more questions at your interviews and to think more critically about your decision which school to attend. Applying to med school is an exciting and stressful process. You need all the help you can get.
