Grade 3-8-A wide-ranging collection of prayers. Divided into five sections, including "Prayers for Special Occasions" and "Prayers for Struggle and Strength," these meditations display a deep sense of spirituality as well as a challenge to empowerment for children through prayer. While many collections celebrate God and the wonders of life and creation, Edelman extends her devotions specifically to address the needs of youth at risk, unsure and in fear, and to provide hope for them. Children in abusive situations; in poverty or neglected; with drug problems; with parents sick, dying, or incarcerated; with special needs; or in foster care are the subjects of many of her poetic conversations between a young person and God. While she also celebrates the wonder of the commonplace, it is her attention to the needs of children who are struggling that makes this collection especially powerful. The cream-colored pages, large and uncluttered, lend a sense of serenity to the selections. Collier's luminous collage-and-watercolor artwork, both small and full page, extend the devotions by providing a palpable sense of hope as seen through the eyes of his stunningly rendered children. The artist's thematic use of puzzle pieces and vertical bands of light representing blessings conveys a reverence that underscores the eloquence of the selections.
