The prospect of having a family member associate with a child carrying the AIDS virus provokes conflicting impulses of sympathy and self-preservation. It also calls for making a clear moral choice. But for communities and school districts, uninformed policy often preempts this choice, and the stricken child is further victimized by exclusion or containment. Kirp (public policy, Berkeley) presents seven case studies that vividly illustrate these problems. His clear overview of a major conflict that has caught the nation off-guard reveals that not every incident need result in shunning and shame. These charged stories should encourage parents, neighborhoods, and school officials to promote open forums and make informed decisions about risk assessment and individual rights.
