Ages 4-8. The traditional Christmas courtship tale hits the graveyard in this funny Halloween spin-off. A dapper ghoul tries to woo his "good friend" (no mention of true love here) with a cumulative succession of humorous, creepy gifts: a vulture in a dead tree, hissing cats, fat toads, cooked worms, and more until a final wide-open question leaves readers to "guess what" the suitor finally receives after all these offerings. The list offers plenty of laughs, but it's the illustrations that are the real draw here. In pen, ink, and watercolors, Raglin juxtaposes costumed elegance with inspired, grotesque details that kids will find irresistible--the female ghoul's elegant dress and fangs; the slimy toads in doily bonnets--and children will have fun finding the characters transformed in each new spread: one page shows the "four giggling ghosts" playing cards, for example, while on a following page, they become the laundry on the line. For kids who find open endings more fun than frustrating, this offers a surefire hit for Halloween story hours. Gillian Engberg
