Except for a savage review of Norman Podhoretz's Making It (1968), these refreshingly independent-minded pieces celebrate daring, honest writing wherever Garrett finds it--in the past (novelist Mary Johnston, who died in 1936), as well as in the present (Shelby Foote, Fred Chappell, Reynolds Price, and others, mostly Southern). A lively collection.
