PreSchool-Grade 2 Poulin's large full-page color paintings should immediately attract children's attention. Poulin shows a working-class Montreal neighborhood in vivid detail. This is where Daniel lives with his father and Josephine, his cat. Josephine disappears regularly on Saturdays, and one day Daniel decides to look for her. His search leads him from his basement to the back alley, from the bridge, past shops, to the playground, and around the corner to a neighbor's back yard, where the Gagnons give a party every week for the neighborhood cats. The story is slight, but the paintings invite a second look. The variety of scenes and the barely visible cat hold readers' interest and create suspense. Pencil sketches beside the simple text elaborate the story further. Older preschoolers through primary graders will have fun looking for Josephine.
