Bringing Back the Animals - Hardcover

This collection of "biographies" of endangered species identifies threatened wildlife around the world and the measures being taken to protect the creatures and their habitats. Facts, anecdotes and physical descriptions of the bottle-nosed dolphin, African elephant and the water buffalo, among others, are presented in no-nonsense language. Each spread includes an illustration of the featured animal. In an unfortunate juxtaposition, however, Williams's renderings are merely representative, and her misshapen beasts--sometimes sporting smiles and rosy cheeks--greatly detract from the information-packed text. In addition, the oversized picture-book format is not likely to hold much appeal for the intended age group. Sadly, this earnest plea for the continued support of conservationists may not find its audience. The book includes a listing of conservation organizations. Ages 8-up.

Grade 2-3-- A hodgepodge of generalities. The simplistic and sometimes incorrect text is accompanied by impressionistic full-color illustrations. Purporting to show how cooperation can result in the saving of endangered species on a global scale, the text never includes specifics; phrases such as ``some people'' and ``some governments'' run through the commentary. Complex problems are reduced to simple-minded solutions: ``If we work together to reduce pollution . . . we can help preserve the ice kingdom ruled by the polar bear.'' Errors abound: some blue whales are as long as 30 cars end to end (450 feet?), the giant panda is classified as a type of bear. Although a list of organizations is appended, there is no indication of what each does or how readers can effectively participate.
