"What do you do when you pray for years for a child and the child God gives you is handicapped?" That was the opening line for a sermon that the preacher entitled "God's White Elephant Gifts". That made an impression with me. So when I let the kids talk me into compiling the stories I told at Christmas into a book, I chose that for a title. We've all had things happen that we don't understand. I don't even understand why God sent His son to die for me. When the children were young we started a family tradition of having a Christmas story every night for the 30 days before Christmas. Some of these stories are original, some are retold from other good storytellers. It is my hope that you find some pleasure in reading some of our family's favorite stories.

About the Author:
The Chowning family was more or less an ordinary American family (father Will a one-hour delivery driver in Kansas City and mother Lydia a stay-at-home caregiver for Will’s ailing parents and homeschool teacher for four children) when in 1999 their lives changed forever. Will’s dream was to be a missionary, so it was a happy day for him when we got a chance to move our family to the Amazon River. Our original plan was to spend 18 months helping the Ticuna tribe rebuild a Bible school that had been built by Koreans and abandoned. But in those 18 months, we found we loved the national people and the work. So some years later we are still missionaries who often are in three different countries (Colombia, Peru and Brazil) in one day.
