Bill Slavin is an award-winning children's book illustrator with over 50 books to his credit. His works include Stanley?s Party and The Bear on the Bed. He lives in Millbrook, Ontario.

Gr. 3-5. From the Starting with Space series, this colorful volume offers a short introduction to a huge subject. Coverage is broad rather than deep. Each chapter considers a different topic: searching from Earth leads into going into space, the exploration of the solar system, and the universe beyond. Like a good curriculum teacher, the text takes more than one approach to a given topic. The discussion of rockets, for example, begins with the myth of Icarus soaring toward the sun, offers brief discussions of their history and how they work, and ends with an activity titled "Make a two-stage balloon rocket," which looks like fun. Bill Slavin's illustrations, all in color, include appealing line-and-wash drawings as well as photographs. Good supplementary material for astronomy collections. Carolyn Phelan
