After discovering that a group of ferrets is called a business, Sarah Asper-Smith became fascinated with the intersection of language and the natural world. Using bold prints overlaid on vibrant colors, she created Have You Ever Seen a Smack of Jellyfish? to chronicle the poetic words used to describe the magnificent animal kingdom. From a knot of frogs to a watch of nightingales, the book takes the reader on a fascinating journey through the alphabet with animals as their guide, starting with an army of ants, and ending with a zeal of zebras. The color illustrations and playful use of language will appeal to readers of all ages.

About the Author:
Born and raised in Juneau, Alaska, Sarah once made her home on a boat in the harbor. Now having traded her houseboat for bay windows, she is attending graduate school in Philadelphia, but will be returning to Alaska in 2011. She loves color and good typography, form and function; curry and goat cheese and fresh herbs, the sound of waves and the sound of wind, word play and Scrabble and puns. She loves hot tea on cold days and surrounding herself with people she cares about. Spending time alone in her cabin in the woods, she came up with the idea for a children's alphabet book. Using unusual collective nouns for groups of animals, she created this collection. She has seen a smack of jellyfish and hopes to avoid stumbling into a nest of vipers.
Review:
"Have You Ever Seen a Smack of Jellyfish? has been a fun new addition to our collection of picture books. I love learning what all the groups of animals are called. So interesting! This would be a cute ABC book for your budding naturalist."

"The hook here is as much the artwork as the text. Asper-Smith uses silhouettes for the words and animals on each page while bright colors provide the backgrounds. ...Asper-Smith has made something beautiful here, giving preschoolers a collection of thoughtful terms and animals to learn about and graphic arts fans something to appreciate. Have You Seen a Smack of Jellyfish? is the book that readers of A Compendium of Collective Nouns will learn their first big words from. Both are crisp and witty walks on the wild side of the English language, and along with all the other titles discussed here, they prompt the question: 'Who knew learning could be so cool?'"
