No. 21 of an edition of 1200 copies. 68 fables, each with a reproduction of a b&w engraving by Thomas Bewick (1753-1828) at top of page, followed by a short verse, the fable in prose, then the moral. Preceded by nine page "Life of Aesop" by Oliver Goldsmith. Many pages as yet unopened. Very light browning in margins of pages, browning to edges of text block and edges of boards, heavy browning to spine.

With the Original Wood Engravings by Thomas Bewick and an Illustrated Preface by Edwin Person". Bound with green cloth covered boards and red cloth covered spine, black title plate with title in gilt on the spine. Very neat and clean. Hinge and text-block sound, end papers new. Closed paged edges rough cut and darkened. Contents smooth, scattering of little spots sporadically, darkened towards edges. It is laid out with text and illustration with red line border surround, very wide margins. A very nice clean sound and neat copy. May incur additional postage charges, especially overseas.

Deluxe edition, numbered & limited to 100 copies and bound in half-vellum with cream paper (or a variant vellum) covered boards, slightly scuffed. Vellum gilt-ruled with titles to spine. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. One previous owner mark, being a serial number(?) to the bottom margin of the title-page. The two portrait tissue-guards are browned, otherwise contents are clean, pages bright throughout. The binding changed over the course of the publication; most copies have titles & a vignette to front board, amended gilt-ruling, and opted to excise the vellum binding-ties, here visible to outer hinges. Collated complete, with 312pp of the Fables, and a further 72pp of 'Supplementary Illustrations of Bewick's Genius'. 28.9cm tall.
