He studied at Aberystwyth and Reading and entered the herbarium of the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew in 1922 as an assistant . In 1925 he worked in Tanganyika and conducted botanical research for the Tsetse Research Department in Tanganyika, Northern Rhodesia , Nyasaland , Uganda , and the Belgian Congo . He became a member of the Linnean Society of London in 1933. The first part of his key for the identification of the savanna genera and species of trees was published in 1939, having been completed shortly before his death. At the time it was intended to publish a second part of the key. Completion by Dr. Glover and Dr. Jackson was delayed until after the war. A list of additions and amendments to Part I is published in this book, which covers the species of the more important genera, with a general index. The book is bound in the original grey paper covered boards with a brown cloth spine and black titling on the front board.
