Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. This volume contains all six of the Round Table pieces, bound in to a single book, each issue of the Round Table Series was published by William Brown ( Edinburgh ) in 1884. Each of the six contained volumes numbered, initialed and limited to 100 copies. Quite attractively bound in leather and boards. Although the book contains appreciations of Ruskin, Rossetti, Emerson, George Eliot and Darwin- the Walt Whitman essay ( entitled Walt Whitman, Poet and Democrat ) is particularly uncommon. Laid in loosely is the bookplate of Harriet Chapman Sprague featuring her home The Maples. Sprague was in possession of two copies, the first of which was acquired by the Penn Library many years ago. The bookplate is particularly rich in bibliographical information penned to the verso, reading ; This is an excellent copy of the L. of P. first Complete Edition. Death Bed Issue. A few copies, not more than fifty, were hurried by being bound up in wrappers for W. 's friends, so this bound issue is called the second issue. This is an extra, H. S has a copy in her room bookcase. Have given copies to the N.Y. Pub. ( Library ) and Columbia. A very good copy with a touch of light rubbing to the extremities. There is a dark stain to the first piece ( Ruskin ) at the corners primarily to the preliminary pages - extending faintly to the first few pages of Ruskin text.
