Book Signed
Paperback. Small 4to. Stiff glossy pictorial wrappers. 240pp, (6pp). Illustrations. Very good. Faint wear to outer wrappers (only). A tight and quite nice 13th edition in the 65-volume "Annual Editions Series. designed to provide the reader with convenient, low-cost access to a wide range of current, carefully selected articles from some of the most important magazines, newspapers, and journals published today." This unusual copy bears a fine autograph edition: Tipped opposite series editor Maddox's "To the Reader" statement is a great-content Typed Letter Signed from him, 1p, 8" X 10 3/4", University Park, MD, 11 July 1973. Addressed to Arnold Gates (1914-93, noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar). Near fine. On letterhead of "The Pennsylvania State University," Maddox graciously thanks Gates (as literary editor of the "Lincoln Herald") for comments on Maddox's 1973 book "The New Left and the Origins of the Cold War." Reads in part: "Your comment about how the revisionists have responded is perfectly true. They are well advised not to restrict the argument to facts, because there they are lost. Hence they have, and will continue to, to condemn me on the grounds of competence, politics, etc. As one who campaigned for George McGovern, I have been amused to see myself pictured as a neo-McCarthyite, a right winger, etc. The fact is that I attacked their books out of consideration for professional integrity, not because I am anti-Left." Signed boldly in full in black ballpoint. With original envelope tipped in as well. Contributors of articles to this volume include Eric Foner, Dee Brown, David Halberstam, Arthur Schlesinger Jr., Stephen E. Ambrose, Nicholas Lemann and other notables.
