8vo, pp. ix, [1 blank], 206; partially unopened, an excellent copy in the original red cloth, spine gilt.First edition. In British broadcasting, Coase scrutinizes the cogency of the arguments employed in order to justify the monopoly that existed in British broadcasting at the time under the B.B.C., 'broadcasting' of course referring to the 'wireless' radio and not to television. This followed debates in the late 1940s, under Attlee's Labour government, as to whether a monopoly was acceptable if the corporation in question served the public good. It is not Coases's contention that there should be no monopoly at all: 'this study is presented in the hope that it will be of assistance in any reasoned discussion of that question'. Ronald Coase received the Nobel Prize in Economics in 199 1.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition. ix, 206 pp. Original cloth. Very Good, in very good dust jacket (unclipped). Ronald H. Coase: Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, 1991, 'for his discovery and clarification of the significance of transaction costs and property rights for the institutional structure and functioning of the economy.' 'Coase concludes that the arguments for the monopoly based on technical, financial and efficiency factors are either incorrect or unproven. He also notices that those who argue in favour of a programme monopoly in the public interest claim to determine on behalf of the listener which broadcast material he should hear. This, according to Coase, reflects 'a totalitarian philosophy or at any rate something verging on it' (Coase, 1950, p. 191)' (Björn Ljungberg, Department of Economic History, Göteborg University: 'R. H. Coase on the Media', Paper at the 15th Nordic Conference on Media and Communication Research Reykjavik, August 10-13 2001).

First Edition
First edition, first impression, of this study of the origins, reputation, and controversies of the BBC's broadcasting monopoly in the mid-20th century. Ronald Coase (1910-2013), then Reader in Economics at the University of London, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1991. Although Coase is careful to avoid passing economic judgement on the monopoly itself, his study outlines "a meticulous examination of the historical-institutional features" of the BBC as an organisation (ODNB). ITV, the first commercial broadcaster to break the BBC monopoly, was launched in 1955. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered and with publisher's device in gilt. With dust jacket. Very light rubbing, minor foxing to endpapers; slight creasing and soiling to jacket, toning to spine, small hole to foot of front fold, unclipped: a near-fine copy in very good jacket.

First Edition
First edition. 8vo. ix, [1], 206 pp. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, dust jacket (spine panel slightly rubbed and toned, faint residue to front turn-in fold from old price sticker, otherwise a very good copy). London, Longmans, Green and Co., The London School of Economics and Political Science. The Nobel Prize winning economist Ronald Coase's first book-length publication, a study of British radio broadcasting in which Coase scrutinised the cogency of the arguments employed in order to justify the monopoly that existed in British broadcasting at the time under the BBC. Although Coase is most commonly associated with the Chicago School, he spent much of his early career at the London School of Economics where he undertook detailed studies on public utilities including the evolution of those institutions and the real-world factors that explained their structure. These studies showcased a formidable blend of regulatory analysis and economic history, and were motivated by 'real world' commercial issues or policy questions, paying careful attention to institutional arrangements and historical details such as legal rules and property rights.

First Edition Signed
First edition of this collection of articles by the Nobel Prize-winning economist. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed and dated by Ronald Coase on the title page. Fine in a fine dust jacket. This is a series of 15 essays written by the 1991 Nobel laureate in economics. Unlike most such collections, the essays are not primarily about Coase's work. The first half of the book contains essays on methodology: what economists do and how they do it. Coase's explanations are thought-provoking. As Coase demonstrates, economics in its theoretical and empirical work is more normative than most economists would prefer to believe. Simple principles are often ignored, replaced by complex ones beyond the ken of economics. The remaining essays are biographical sketches that focus primarily on famous English economists such as Adam Smith and Alfred Marshall. These essays provide insight into the roots of modern economics.
