Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Margaret Fay Shaw's life has spanned a century of change. Today she is lucid, eccentric and an inspiration to others. This autobiography, accompanied by photographs, traces the author's life from America in 1906 to the Isle of Canna today. Born in America early this century, Margaret Fay Shaw was witness to a way of life now unrecognizable. Orphaned in her early teens, she was despatched to a distant cousin near Glasgow for her schooling. It was there that her love for Scotland was born. After studying music in New York in the 1920s, she returned to Scotland. For six years she lived with two weavers in a black house on South Uist, a small island in the Outer Hebrides then largely untouched by the changes of civilization. In 1938 Margaret married the renowned Gaelic scholar and author, John Lorne Campbell. Soon after, they bought the island of Canna where they have lived ever since. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Hardcover in green cloth with gilt titles to spine in Fine condition, dustwrapper with some very slight shelfwear and slight fading to spine but otherwise in Near Fine condition. First edition, pp 150, b&w illustrations. Margaret Fay Shaw's life spans a century of change. In her early teens she was dispatched from the idyllic surroundings of the Alleghenies to stay with a distant cousin near Glasgow. It was here that her love of Scotland was born. After studying music at New York and Paris, she returned to live for six years with two sisters in a cottage on South Uist. Life on South Uist at this time had barely changed from earlier centuries, and the island contained a repository of Gaelic lore and song. Margaret Fay Shaw's collections of this archive and her photography capture a world vanished from the Hebrides. Her autobiography is also a plea in defence of a Gaelic culture and world that is disappearing.
