Book
50 maps, 110 black and white illustrations, xvi + 381pp, references, index, paperback cover extremities a little wear and rubbing, spine faded a little, front free endpapers and fore edge slightly soiled, otherwise a good copy. Some claim the earliest bronze production in the world occurred in South-east Asia; others say it occurred elsewhere. This book presents the debate surrounding the Bronze Age in the Indochina region, providing a systematic and regional presentaton of the current state of knowledge. It illuminates the question of indigenous technological evolution, contrasted with influence from neighbouring civilisations - in this case Southern China. Higham suggests that the the adoption of metallurgy, copper and tin smelting took place in South-east Asia following a period of trading with China, which provided the exotic bronzes. Using a thematic approach, he provides an up-to-date account of the South-east Asian and Chinese Bronze Age, documenting evidence site by site. This is the first time these regions have integrated in research to provide an understanding of how and why their distinct cultures developed.Tracing developments right through to the Iron Age, Higham identifies the distinct regional developments that anticipate the transition into the first Southeast Asia states.

We have always thought of ourselves as unique, but in evolutionary term our uniqueness did not exist until yesterday - and yet now it is only us. What happened? Was it a given that we would conquer the world, or might, under different circumstances, a Denisovan or Neanderthal population be the only ones left? This is the story of us, told for the first time with it's full cast of characters. The boards, binding, text block and dust jacket are all square, tight, and clean. Book price includes 2nd class post in UK only.

Hardcover. Condition: As New. ---MADE IN USA---FULL LEATHER BOUND EDITION--- Book is new with the exception of some minor scratches to the gilding. Gold stamping on cover/spine, gilded page edges, hubbed spine and satin book ribbon---Fifty thousand years ago, Homo sapiens was not the only species of humans in the world. There were also Neanderthals in what is now Europe, the Near East, and parts of Eurasia; Hobbits on the island of Flores in Indonesia; and Denisovans in Siberia and eastern Eurasia. Tom Higham investigates what we know about these other human species and explores what can be learned from the genetic links between them and us. Filled with thrilling tales of recent scientific discoveries, this book offers an engaging synopsis of our current understanding of human origins and raises new and interesting possibilities particularly concerning what contact, if any, these other species might have had with us prior to their extinction. Tom Higham is professor of archaeological science at the Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art at the University of Oxford and director of the Oxford Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit.
