Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (NAP, 1921 on the title page). This book was previously owned by one of the former prisoners of war, the officer Cecil Gordon Bronson. He signed his name on the first front end paper, and penciled around three places in the book where he is referenced, pages 90, 126, and in the index. There's a reference on the Internet to how he was captured: 'Flight Lieutenant Cecil Gordon Bronson (Royal Naval Air Service) sets out to carry out a second attack on the Goeben. He fails to find the ship and is shot down by machine gun fire and made a prisoner having flown low in search of the ship, which has been towed off. Another Short Seaplane is launched from HMS Empress on this morning and it reports that the Goeben has disappeared and that there is no wreckage floating around the spot where she has been lying.' Lieutenant Bronson was awarded the Croix de Guerre from France at the war's end, as was the author of this book, C.L. Wooley (Sir Charles Leonard Woolley). Woolley was a British archaeologist best known for his excavations at Ur in Mesopotamia. He is recognized as one of the first "modern" archaeologists who excavated in a methodical way, keeping careful records, and using them to reconstruct ancient life and history. Woolley was knighted in 1935 for his contributions to the discipline of archaeology. He married the British archaeologist Katharine Woolley.' This book is quite rare. There's actually only one other copy for sale on the Internet. There are two small white spots on the front cover, also a small scuff just off the middle edge, and a crease at the bottom corner. There is a closed tear on the spine (2nd photo), and an indent off the bottom edge of the rear cover just adjacent to the spine. The spine ends have some wear, including a tiny loss at both, and a few little tears at the bottom one. There is rub-through at all four corners. The edges are in very good shape. The top page edges is quite clean, the middle and bottom ones are deckled or rough-cut. The covers bow out a little bit because the pages are fairly thick. The inside covers have a little puffiness in a few spots. They and the end papers are very clean. There's a color frontispiece which is in very nice condition. Facing the title page it created a little bit of spotting in one area. I turned over all the pages to get a clear picture of the condition of the book and to make sure that all the illustrations were present. They are. There is a lot of range in the illustrations, small and large drawings of people and places, plays that were put on, musical instruments that were used (Cecil Gordon Bronson played the violin) a map, photographs, a long list of birds and butterflies that were identified (they had a Field Club), humorous advertisements, a tissue guarded water-color of 'Captain R. Lacy As Sonia' (if that's a guy I'm confused). The last few pages, prior to the Appendixes, describe the prisoners work building a cemetery while guards stood all around them 'with fixed bayonets and magazines charged (there had been an escape during the first effort to build the cemetery). The drawings are quite impressive and interesting. The interior of the book is in very nice condition. The imperfections are all minor. Occasionally there is a light bit of spotting related to a glossy page, but nothing conspicuous, a couple of the glossy paged illustrations have some vertical crinkling. The pages are very clean, only a few specks and a few small spots. There's a sliver of loss at the top corner one page, far from the print. I saw two very tiny edge tears. A few of these rough-cut pages are little longer than the others and they have slight wear at their edges. There are no markings or attachments in the book. And Lieutenant's three pencilings and signature (also in pencil) represent the only writing.
Very rare. British Museum and Museum of the University of Pennsylvania, London, 1975. First edition. Folio, xviii & 260 pages, 65 plates. Original cloth with boards, slight foxing on edges of covers, otherwise a fine, umarked copy. Language: English. This book ships from Europe, shipping costs will be updated accordingly (BPF). Relevant subjects: Mesopotamia.
