A fine copy with a near fine + unclipped wrapper which shows slight chipping to the spine tips and one small closed tear on the front edge. Joint winner of the Booker Prize in 1992, the story is set in the mid 18th century and centres on a slave ship employed in a central trade route in the Atlantic slave trade. The narrative interweaves elements of appalling cruelty and horror with extended comedic interludes.
First illustrated edition (hardback), limited to 500 numbered copies (this is copy number 225), signed by the author and the artist on the limitation page. Square 8vo (23cm by 23cm), 192pp. Illustrated throughout in colour by Paul Hogarth. Original brown cloth, brown cloth slipcase.
