Paperback. Condition: Very Good. What are the global challenges of the twenty-first century? Every year tens of millions of people abandon rural areas for life in the city. With education, health care and even safe water in short supply, cities risk becoming sites of violent conflict for future generations. And yet world governments are doing little to address these demographic shifts. Jeremy Seabrook offers a vivid portrait of the lives of people who migrate from impoverished villages to towns and cities, the changes they face, and the impact these changes have on their psyche and well-being. Contrasting the attitudes of today's governments with those of the past, the book provides a sharp critique of global policies, and an ideal introduction to the impact of urbanisation on modern life. The Small Guides to Big Issues series de-bunks myths and raises questions about the global economic and political system and how it works. They are designed for campaigners and activists, students and researchers, and anyone interested in looking behind the headlines. Produced in partnership with Oxfam, each book provides an informative and thought-provoking guide to current trends and debates, and what needs to happen in order to end poverty and injustice. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Sylvia Pankhurst was a tireless activist for a variety of radical causes, including women's suffrage, labour movements and international solidarity campaigns. She made pioneering contributions to gender and class politics, revolutionary communist politics and the struggles against imperialism, racism and fascism. In addition, Pankhurst founded and edited four newspapers, and wrote and published twenty-two books, and numerous pamphlets and articles. In this biography, Mary Davis provides a much-needed reappraisal of a woman whose contribution to a wide variety of causes is too often marginalised or overlooked, whether as the employer of the first black journalist in Britain - the activist and writer Claude McKay - or as an early campaigner for pan-Africanism. Pankhurst's changing affiliations and commitments - from her early suffragette activities, though her involvement with disenfranchised and impoverished women in London's East End, to her passionate embrace of the Soviet revolution, the cause of communism worldwide and the fight against imperialism and fascism - mirror the history of radical politics in the twentieth century. Mary Davis's lucid and accessible account of Pankhurst's political life restores a remarkable woman to her rightful place in twentieth-century history. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. At a time when terrorism is opening the way for new forms of warfare worldwide, this book provides a much-needed account of the real dangers we face, and argues that the elimination of weapons of mass destruction and of war are attainable and necessary goals. Written by Nobel Peace prize winner and former nuclear physicist Joseph Rotblat, who was involved in the creation of the first atom bomb, and biologist/ psychologist Robert Hinde, War No More provides expert insight into the nature of modern warfare - including weapons of mass destruction. Examining the key factors that contribute to conflict, the authors explain how best to approach a peaceful future. If war is ever to be eliminated, we must address key issues such as the gap between rich and poor; have fully effective arms controls, and above all we must have better education. The authors emphasise the United Nations - as well as NGOs, religious groups, and grassroots movements - also have important parts to play. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Capitalist growth is widely heralded as the only answer to the crisis still sweeping the global economy. Yet the era of corporate globalisation has been defined by unprecedented levels of inequality and environmental degradation. A return to capitalist growth threatens to exacerbate these problems, not solve them. In The Poverty of Capitalism, John Hilary reveals the true face of transnational capital in its insatiable drive for expansion and accumulation. He exposes the myth of 'corporate social responsibility' (CSR), and highlights key areas of conflict over natural resources, labour rights and food sovereignty. Hilary also describes the growing popular resistance to corporate power, as well as the new social movements seeking to develop alternatives to capitalism itself. This book will be essential reading for all those concerned with global justice, human rights and equity in the world order. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. How and why are European welfare systems and the labour market changing? How do they affect the daily lives of those facing unemployment or precarious work? Anne Gray shows how the idea of unemployment benefits as a right is evolving into a regime closer to American 'workfare'. She explains how this policy forces the unemployed into low paid, temporary or part-time jobs associated with the new 'flexible' labour market. Drawing on unemployed people's own accounts of their experiences - in the UK, Germany, France and Belgium - Gray illustrates the job market as seen from the dole queue. Exploring the changing nature of work in Europe, Gray reveals why is there a shortage of full-time permanent jobs, what is to be done, and what the future holds for labour market regulation in Europe. Providing clear explanations about shifts in welfare policy, this book is ideal for trade unionists, activists and students, and makes an important contribution to wider debates on globalisation and the future of work. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This collection considers the role of long-term urban planning in the development of cities, covering a range of North American and European cities, and focusing on Belfast's social, economic and political developments. The major cities of the West are characterised by division, uneven development and unequal distribution of jobs. In Belfast these general Western urban characteristics are extended and heightened by association with a long-standing political crisis and low-intensity conflict. The authors integrate global debates on urban development and summarise contemporary theories on cities and their future. An assortment of interventions and delivery mechanisms are considered, and among the key topics covered are urban economies and social exclusion; the planning of city regions; the sustainable city; urban regeneration; the role of culture in remaking cities; and the future governance of cities. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Oil and gas are running out faster than the vast majority of people realise and this will have seismic consequences for the whole world. Even by the year 2005, oil will start to become in short supply, prices will start going up, and politicians will opt for the nuclear energy option - with all the consequences that this option implies. The Final Energy Crisis illustrates the oil shortages, explains why Kyoto agreements are impossible, and how the oil wars which already span the globe, from Angola to Chechnya, will only get worse as the need for cheap oil will dominate the world's political agenda. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Over the past two decades, the major international corporations have become industrial lobbyists within the European Union to such an extent that they pose a threat to democracy. Europe Inc. provides a much-needed insight into the systematic ways in which transnational corporations work through lobby groups to shape EU policy. With a new introduction, updated statistics and new resources, it's an invaluable handbook for anyone interested in the EU and the political power that corporations wield. The authors cover the major players in this anti-democratic practice and analyse the factors that have enabled corporate influence in Europe to dominate. They examine how governments have been persuaded to increase competitiveness by dismantling and privatising public services, deregulating industry, and dismantling social and environmental protections; the increasing influence of corporate lobby groups on decision makers and the corresponding lack of voice given to small business, organised labour and individual citizens; the impact of the single market and currency; structural adjustment in Eastern Europe; the role of European industrial lobby groups within the WTO, and the important Multilateral Agreement on Investment. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Can fine art survive in an age of mass media? If so, in what forms and to what purpose? And can radical art still play a critical role in today's divided world? These are the questions addressed in the Art in the Age of Mass Media, as John Walker examines the fascinating relationship between art and mass media, and the myriad interactions between high and low culture in a postmodern, culturally pluralistic world. Using a range of historic and contemporary works of art, Walker explores the variety of ways in which artists have responded to the arrival of new, mass media. He ranges from the socialist paintings of Courbet to the anti-Nazi photomontages of Heartfield, from community murals and Keith Haring's use of graffiti to the kitsch self-promotion associated with Jeff Koons. The new edition describes what happened during the 1990s, including Toscani's adverts for Benetton, the simulations of Leeds 13, art and cinema, Damien Hirst, and the cyberart currently being produced for the internet. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. From downloading music and movies to accessing free software, digital media is forcing us to rethink the very idea of intellectual property. While big companies complain about lost profits, the individual has never enjoyed such freedom and autonomy. Berry explores this debate in a concise way, offering an ideal introduction for anyone not versed in the legalistic terminology that - up until now - has dominated coverage of this issue. Looking at the historical development of the free software and the open source movement he examines its growth, politics and potential impact, showing how the ideas that inspired the movement have now begun to influence the wider cultural landscape. He explores whether free software offers us the potential to re-think our relationship with technology in the information society. This book will appeal to students of media and journalism, and anyone interested in new opportunities for creating a truly independent and democratic media. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Examining the role of the modern nation state, Dexter Whitfield assesses the achievements, failures, costs and benefits of the neoliberal and third way transformation of the state. He demonstrates that private finance of infrastructure, marketisation of government and privatisation of the welfare state are accelerating the globalisation process and generating ever larger financial, social and environmental crises. Whitfield analyses current trends which are exacerbated by the marketisation and partnership agenda advocated by global bodies such as the World Bank, IMF and WTO. He reveals how these policies further reduce the capacity of the state in the global economy, its ability to provide good quality public services and inevitably create a corporate welfare complex. Within a framework for understanding the extent, scale and impact of the transformation of the state, the author forecasts the implications of the continuation of current policies. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Assessing the impact of the increasing severity of border controls since they were first introduced, Teresa Hayter makes the controversial case for their abolition. Focussing on postwar immigration controls, especially the use of such controls against the peoples of former European colonies and East Europeans, and their effects on asylum seekers, Hayter examines the recent history of European coordination of border controls and the notion of Fortress Europe. The new edition brings this seminal work up to date with a lengthy preface exploring how the practices of the British government over the past few years has continued the process Hayter outlines in the main text of abusive and irrational border controls and the criminalisation of entire communities. This second edition also updates the bibliography and list of campaigning groups, and ends with a new manifesto for a world without borders, declaring 'no one is illegal!'. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Footwork is an original street-corner ethnography drawing on the themes of urban regeneration, lost space and the 24-hour city. From the rough sleeping homeless to street drinkers and sex workers, it shows how urban modernisation, development and austerity politics impact the hidden lives of people living and working on the streets. To create this anthropology of the modern British city, Footwork follows the work of a team of outreach workers in Cardiff, tasked to look out for the homeless and others similarly vulnerable, harried and exposed. Tom Hall's fieldwork study encompasses aspects of urban geography, care work and street-level poverty, violence and isolation, this book reveals the stories of the vulnerable and isolated - people living in the city we often choose to ignore. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The public had no right to most of this information - until now. On 1 January 2005 the Freedom of Information Act came into force giving the British public a legal right for the first time to access information from more than 100,000 public authorities. But in order to take advantage of this new right you first have to know who holds the information and how to get it. Your Right to Know gives you the tools you need to get the information you want. It explains all the main laws of access in clear language with practical advice on how to file actual requests. Chapters deal in depth with how to get information from all areas of public life: central government, transport, security and defense, the justice system, police and law enforcement, health, the environment, education, local government, business, and individuals. You'll find in each chapter an outline of who is responsible for what, where to go for information and how to get that information and hold public servants and public agencies accountable. If you've ever wanted to force open the secretive doors of government, this is the guide you need. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The 50th anniversary of the Bretton Woods conference, from which emerged the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, occurs in 1994. Many academics feel that these international financial institutions have done and continue to do more harm than good and should be disbanded. This book pursues this argument providing an analysis of the global economy and offers alternatives to the existing system. The author has compiled a series of provocative essays by leading researchers and activists on three crucial questions: what kind of development should new global economic institutions promote, what are the viable alternatives to the World Bank and IMF and what other global economic institutions are needed to promote a more just trading order with greater social and ecological responsibility. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This text takes a critical look at the way in which human rights issues have been brought to the fore in international affairs. For ten years, the language of international intervention has been transformed. The UN and Nato's new policy of interventionism - as shown in Somalia, Bosnia, Kosovo and East Timor - has been hailed as "humanitarian action", part of a new "ethical" approach to foreign policy. The establisment of an international criminal court and ad hoc tribunals for war crimes in the former Yugoslavia reflect this shift in perception, which has been welcomed by world leaders, government critics and even NGOs. David Chandler offers a rigorous critique of this apparently benign shift in international relations to reveal the worrying political implications of a new human rights discourse. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. For the first time in history, the world's population is ageing. For rich countries in the west, economies rely on youthful populations to provide for those who have retired. We face a profound economic and social crisis - how do we care for the elderly when pensions and social security systems are under threat, housing is short and fewer young people are entering the workplace? Yet this is only half the story. Populations in the poorer countries of the South are also ageing. Life-expectancy has increased due the availability of lifesaving medicine. Child mortality has decreased, so people are having smaller families. India will soon have one of the largest populations of over-sixties. The one-child policy in China will similarly lead to a severe imbalance in the age-profile of the people. In A World Grown Old, Jeremy Seabrook examines the real implications of the ageing phenomenon and challenges our preconceptions about how it should be tackled. Arguing that the accumulated skills of the elderly should be employed to enrich society, rather than being perceived as a 'burden', he calls for a radical rethinking of our attitude to population issues, migration, social structures and employment policy. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The work of the Beat Generation writers has evolved from being an important part of the counter culture of the 1960s to being viewed by many critics as the most significant literary and cultural phenomenon of the post-war period. Here, in a series of specially commissioned essays, leading academics consider the work of the major Beat writers alongside that of lesser known black and women writers. This collection shows that Beat means more than the core group of Kerouac, Ginsberg, Burroughs and Corso. The contributors discuss the meanings of the term "Beat", the poetics of Beat writing, the influence of Indian and Buddhist philosophy, jazz influences, the importance of Emerson and Whitman, and the relation to Ezra Pound and the Modernist tradition. The feminist response to and involvement in the movement is given special prominence. As the only up to date work on the subject, "The Beat Generation Writers" will be a useful text for students of English and American Literature, Popular Culture and Communications Studies. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This history reclaims the Second World War as a global fight 'from below'. The vast majority of historical accounts have focused on the regular armies of the allied powers, however, the often-neglected people's militias were crucial not only to the defeat of fascism, but also colonialism, imperialism and even capitalism. Looking at militias in Yugoslavia, Greece, Poland and Latvia, as well as the Warsaw Uprising and anti-fascist movements in Germany, it presents a different battle, fought on different terms. Widening its scope to India - where an independence movement was shaking an already weak British Empire, and onto alternative anti-imperialist struggles in Indonesia and Vietnam, a global picture of people's resistance is revealed. Despite these radical elements, the allied governments were more interested in creating a new order to suit their interests, and many of these movements were ultimately betrayed. However, many shook the existing world order to its core. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
