Illustrated with black-and-white photographs, maps, and drawings by Remington, etc. "In no book of comparable size can the reader get a better understanding of what happened that red Sabbath on the Little Bighorn, and how, and why." - New York Times. "It is the kind of book that ought to be on the shelf of every student of American Western or military history." - Paul I. Wellman, New York Herald Tribune Weekly Book Review. "Sergeant Charles Windolph was the last white survivor of the Battle of the Little Bighorn when he described it.A six-year veteran of the Seventh Cavalry, Windolph had participated in the Yellowstone Expedition of 1873 and the Black Hills Expedition of 1874. He fought in Captain Frederick W. Benteen's troop on that fatal Sunday and recalls in vivid detail the battle that wiped out Custer's command. Equally vivid is the evidence marshaled by Frazier and Robert Hunt on events leading up to the battle and on the investigation that followed." - excerpt from the rear outer cover.
