Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 40 pages. Published in 2011. Retrospective collection of photographs. One of the most beautiful collections in the Steidl "Robert Frank Project". The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the Softcover Edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. An austerely elegant production by Robert Frank and Gerhard Steidl: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial cloth boards with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs and text by Robert Frank. Printed in tritone on pristine-white, thick uncoated stock paper by Steidl in Gottingen, Germany to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is exemplary in every respect. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Robert Frank's "Pangnirtung". Landscape photographs of a village of Inuit ("Eskimo") inhabitants in the Arctic Circle. There were roughly 1300 Inuit at the time Frank and his lifelong friend Reginald Rankin visited the remote village in August 1992. The place is un-inhabited today. Despite the widespread perception (as a result of "The Americans"), Robert Frank was never the street photographer-as-anthropologist. His subject is ultimately death, not life, and he is THE elegiac artist of desolation, loss, and "memento mori" par excellence. He did not photograph a single Inuit in Pangnirtung, who were already dying off although many were still alive when he visited, as if anticipating and commemorating - before it finally happened - their imminent extinction. In addition to anti-Ansel Adams images of the most majestic natural landscapes, Frank photographed the Christian cemetery where Western explorers and settlers are buried, presenting them as the collection's coda. There is, as it were, only grave beauty in every Robert Frank photograph. Robert Frank died on September 9, 2019 at the age of 94 as the greatest photographer of our time. An absolute "must-have" title for Robert Frank collectors. This title is an art photography classic. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Should NOT be confused with the Softcover Edition. A scarce copy thus. 27 tritone plates. Three of Robert Frank's books were selected as among the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". At the age of 92, Robert Frank was profiled in 2016 by The New York Times as "the greatest photographer of our time". A fine copy. Book First Edition
Condition: Wie neu. Steidl, Göttingen. 2011. First edition, first printing. Hardcover without jacket (as issued). 230 x 305 mm. 40 pages, 27 black & white plates. Condition: Outside with slightest trace of use; no defects. Inside new, mint, unread. Overall near perfect, like new condition! Collector`s copy! By the maker of 3 of the most important photobooks ever published: Les americains/The americans (Martin Parr , The Photobook , page 247), Flower Is (Martin Parr , The Photobook, page 264) and The Lines of my hand (Martin Parr, The Photobook, page 261). "In August 1992 Robert Frank's good friend Reginald Rankin invited Frank on a trip to Pangnirtung, a village of around 1,300 Inuit inhabitants in the Arctic Circle. This book is Frank's documentation of the five-day sojourn. Curiously Frank depicts Pangnirtung void of its people: the still harbour, public housing, a convenience store, a telephone post. Sincere without being sentimental, the photos are shaped by a short text from Frank himself, "Prefabricated homes along the main road in Pangnirtung. At times a decorated window reflections inside or outside. Stones maybe the balance of a big sky above" (from the publisher) Robert Frank was born in Zurich, Switzerland in 1924 and went to the United States in 1947. He is best known for his seminal book The Americans, first published in 1959, which gave rise to a distinct new art form in the photo-book, and his experimental film Pull My Daisy, made in 1959. His other important projects include the book Black White and Things (1954) the book Lines of My Hand (1972) and the film Cocksucker Blues (1972). Frank's work has been the subject of major exhibitions around the world and is included in many significant public and private collections. He divides his time between New York City and Nova Scotia, Canada.***************Steidl, Göttingen. 2011. Erstausgabe. Originalausgabe. Hardcover ohne Schutzumschlag. 230 x 305 mm. 40 Seiten, 27 schwarz-weiß Fotos. Zustand: Aussen mit leichtesten (kaum sichtbaren) Gebrauchsspuren; keine Mängel. Innen neu, ungelesen, verlagsfrisch. Insgesamt nahezu perfekter, neuwertiger Zustand! Sammler-Exemplar! Vom Macher drei der wichtigsten Fotobücher aller Zeiten: Les americains, The americans (Martin Parr , The Photobook , Seite 247), Flower Is (Martin Parr, The Photobook , Seite 264), The Lines of my hand (Martin Parr, The Photobook, Seite 261).
